On the latest episode, Melissa Mitchell-Blitch and I tackled something every family business wrestles with: boundaries.
To demystify the term: what are you responsible for, what are you not, and what are the consequences of that?
I appreciate how Melissa makes this idea practical for family companies. Instead of an abstract psychological principle, she grounds boundaries in the experience of working in and owning a company with family, like:
— Family members who struggle with the flexibility the company can provide
— Unspoken expectations creating silent disappointment
Melissa brings a rare combination of experience as well: she is a CPA turned psychologist who saw families succeed financially but fracture relationally. She tells her story to differentiate technical advising from focusing on family dynamics; both are valuable, and both are necessary for a chaos-proof family company.
I hope you enjoy the podcast. As my grandfather would have said, thank you so very, very much for listening.
