A few songs resonated with me during and after my family company exit. One of those was U2’s “Walk On”. At the end of the song, Bono sings:
Leave it behind
You’ve got to leave it behind
All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
The song hit me because I realized the things I had built were now in others’ hands. My mistakes and unfinished business would remain that way. I learned that in leaving I had to learn to leave it behind and walk towards what came next.
Episode 10 - Kennesaw State University Panel
When Kennesaw State University’s Family Enterprise Center invited me to join a virtual panel, I wasn’t sure how many people would show up to hear about what leaving a family company feels like.
Not the logistics of succession planning. Not the legal or tax implications of a transfer. The felt experience of it. The grief and the relief, sometimes in the same moment.
Our panel and the chat were active from the moment we started.
People logging on who were in the middle of leaving. They were thinking about leaving but not sure they could. They needed to help a family member exit and didn’t know where to begin.
Likewise, for that audience, I hope this episode creates space and gives ideas that allow you to consider your eventual exit.
